Quirkles Co-creator Demonstrates Cornstarch and Water Experiment
As I mentioned in a previous post, it’s always fun to stumble across Quirkles videos on YouTube. These fun children’s books support connecting science and literature, which is one of our passions around Steve Spangler Science. This week, Quirkles co-founder Terri Johnson, headed back to Ozarks First KOLR 10 news to show off some of the cool properties of Oobleck… the cornstarch and water quicksand. Terri had a great time getting messy with the KOLR 10 anchor and even made mention of the growing popularity of walking on “water” with the gooey Oobleck. If you are a fan of Spangler Science or the Ellen Degeneres show, you probably remember when I stormed the stage of the Ellen show with a cement truck, a few hundred gallons of water, 2,500 boxes of cornstarch and a very brave audience member, who walked across a giant pool of Oobleck! I shudder at the thought of when my son will be old enough to conduct experiments like this in my nice new kitchen.
Thats what old shower curtains or old vinyl tablecloths are for. Make the mess. Roll it up and toss in the washer and dryer. Works for playdough, planting, decorating cookies and cupcakes.
If you play your cards right, the cool things your son will learn while he experiments in your nice new kitchen (lab) will tap his curiosity and open his mind to some brand new concepts. Someday he might do well enough to buy you a new kitchen.
I am a retired children’s librarian. My partner and I always included science experiments in our storytimes and they were very successful. Our storytime members would request the science experiment if it had not made an appearance by mid storytime. Quirkles sound wonderful and I will be putting in a request for them at our local library.
Excellent experiment, I know what the kids and I are doing they next time I babysit!
