The Arctic Plunge is for Sissies – Walking on Glass is the Way to Ring in the New Year

Some people do crazy things to kick off the New Year, like jumping in a frozen lake or walking on hot coals. I celebrate the New Year with my own crazy stunt – walking on glass. This isn’t for the weak and not an activity for anyone to try at home. But with a little science know-how and a lot of sharp, broken glass, this is my way of ringing in the New Year.

Ending the Year with a Favorite Experiment – Monster Foam

It’s a tradition on the local Denver NBC affiliate to have my 3 boys on at the end of the year to share our favorite experiment. This year my young scientists chose the Monster Foam or Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment that I also performed on the Ellen Show earlier this year. If you can do an experiment on a small scale then it only going to get better when you super size it. We brought 3 large flasks on with us to make the biggest eruption of Elephant’s Toothpaste to celebrate the New Year.

Shrink a Cup in a Pressure Cooker

Are your styrofoam cups too big? Do they hold just too much liquid for you to handle? Instead of super-sized, do you prefer your cups tiny sized? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you need to try this week’s experiment. All you need is a pressure cooker, water, styrofoam cup and an unlocked back door. I chose my sister in-laws house, because after all, you shouldn’t do this experiment at home, but rather at a friend’s home. This experiment helps answer the question, “what will happen if I put something under extreme pressure?”

After Dinner Science: The Ultimate Table Trick Challenge

You are busy cooking the turkey and preparing all the side dishes. Then everyone will sit down to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast. But do you have a finale to your perfect meal today? You need to amaze your guests with the ultimate table trick challenge. Yes, we will be performing this in the Spangler home this evening.

Drop the egg in the bottle, make the egg fly, whip off the table cloth and make a soda geyser all in under 60 seconds. The soda geyser will be the big finish with the guests drinking from the fountain.

Did you take the Table Trick Challenge this Thanksgiving? If you did, leave us a comment below or send us a picture or video of your family taking the challenge. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Steve Spangler Science.

News Team Takes the Barry White Challenge During Heavy Gas Experiment

Helium makes your voice sound high and squeaky, because it’s six times lighter than air. But what about a gas that is six times heavier than air? I’ve done this demonstration several times before, including on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. It’s always vert entertaining and a lot of fun. About 30 seconds before we went on-air, the entire news anchor team on our 9News Morning Show decided to participate in our heavy gas experiment with sulfur hexafluoride. The result was complete controlled chaos! Take a look…
