Becky Ditchfield never wants to know what we’re doing for our Science Mondays segment on KUSA-TV 9News. This was our last segment of the year and I wanted to make it one for her to remember. I pulled out an old favorite from the Spangler repertoire, but it was new to Becky. In anticipation of your next question, here’s the disappearing ink recipe.
It’s back to school time and, these days, that means time for teachers to start compiling new classroom ideas from the internet. Whether looking at blogs, chatting on Twitter or browsing educational sites, most teachers have moved into the “techno-age” and are embracing the internet as a forum for sharing and gaining knowledge, tips and idea. When the summer sun comes around, my boys love making pictures with these light-sensitive materials. The Nature Print Paper is a fun and easy way to make a “photograph” of your favorite objects using the power of the sun. When we are ready to take it to the next level, we break out the Blueprints on Fabric and make our own squares of textiles with images printed on them as well. I’ve talked to lots of teachers who love this activity for summer camps, VBS, even end of the year parties. I took these cool products on the air at 9News to show viewers a great way to have fun in the sun. Check out the video below to see what all of the buzz is about…
I always love the opportunity to share some of my favorite inexpensive science experiments. One of our favorites at the Spangler Science offices is making your own “lava lamp.” We take this one on the road, and it’s always a hit with teachers looking for unique, budget-friendly projects. Just add take a Baby Soda Bottle test tube, a True Colors tablet and a little oil and water… now you have your own bubbling potion. Just watch the video to find out how it works.
