Spangler Failed to Qualify for the Olympic Team – Revealing Video Tells Why

The Vancouver 2010 opening ceremonies are Friday night and to celebrate, the Morning Men of 9News tried out for Team USA.

Okay, I’m a science geek, but I’ve always dreamed of being an Olympic athlete. To realize this dream, I joined my on-air co-workers at 9News – Gary Shapiro, Gregg Moss, Graeme Nistler and Rob Proctor – to form the 9News ice skating team. Here’s the problem… we received some ill-advised guidance from legendary but shadowy Olympic coach Boris Kreskov. This opportunity, along with the $500 I gave him, proved to have some flaws. I also made a bad judgment call when I brought my fire extinguisher. Take a look…

Kreskov put us through a series of unusual exercises that involved both yoga and psychological intimidation before turning us loose on skates.

Shapiro, Nistler and Proctor actually stayed upright. Moss looked fetching in his Spiderman helmet, while I stunned the coach and a handful of onlookers with my use of a fire extinguisher to propel myself across the ice.

Thanksgiving Table Tricks – Egg Drop Inertia

My relatives all know that any time we are gathered around the table is a great time for me to show off my newest table tricks… Thanksgiving is no exception.  But, with something like the Egg Drop it has to be just right, so why not practice with Mark Koebrich on 9News first?  But, when the segment starts out with a broken egg before we even start the experiment, I start to wonder whether this was a good idea or not.  In the end, Mark got the egg in the glass… thanks to Newton’s laws of inertia.  But, the real trick came when I broke out my new trick.  Five glasses of water, five toilet paper rolls, and, yes, five eggs to drop into the glasses… and, it was a success.  The relatives will be so proud.

Check out the video to see a sneak peek of what my Thanksgiving afternoon will look like and read

Egg in the Bottle Trick – A Special Request from Twitter

It’s back to school time and, these days, that means time for teachers to start compiling new classroom ideas from the internet. Whether looking at blogs, chatting on Twitter or browsing educational sites, most teachers have moved into the “techno-age” and are embracing the internet as a forum for sharing and gaining knowledge, tips and idea. In fact, I received a tweet over the weekend from a teacher looking for a little advice on sharing the classic Egg in a Bottle trick during her Back to School Night.

In the spirit of inspiring more teachers to incorporate technology in the classroom, I took this teacher’s Twitter inquiry to my weekly 9News segment and gave the instructions on how to get the egg in the bottle. Watch the video and read the experiment for more info… and if you have any questions be sure to send me a tweet.

Broadcasting from Deck 10 Onboard the Carnival Spirit – Science at Sea LIVE!

If it’s light at 4:00 a.m. in Alaska, why not try to broadcast live from the ship? We were 70 miles off the coast of Alaska on our way to Sitka when we broadcast this video back to KUSA-TV in Denver via Skype. Huge thanks to MTN Satellite Services and the Carnival Information Systems people for providing the increased bandwidth to broadcast our segment.

Mysterious Floating Water Science Experiment

Fill the glass jar with water and cover it with a card. As you turn the whole thing upside down, the audience can hardly contain themselves. The room quiets down as you precariously position the inverted jar and card a few feet above someone’s head. And yes, I love the look of terror on my “helper’s” face when I take the card out from under the jar. Watch the video below and read the experiment for a lesson on how to make some science magic.
