Weather and Science Day 2011 – Erupting Clouds, Giant Smoke Rings and Exploding Trash Cans Captivate Huge Audience

From the moment the gates opened at 9:30 AM, there was an air of excitement that ran through Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. The event was billed as the largest hands-on science show ever presented in Colorado… or maybe the country for that matter. In 2009, the Colorado Rockies teamed up with 9News KUSA-TV and Steve Spangler Science to produce the first annual Weather and Science Day, which drew a crowd of 5,400 and earned the Spangler team their first Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Physics Lesson.

Ticket sales to this year’s event were in excess of 10,000, making this a real challenge for the Steve Spangler Science team. “When we originally sat down and starting planning the event with Steve, he challenged us to help him create something more than a sit-and-watch show,” explained Carly Reed, special event coordinator at Steve Spangler Science. “Steve suggested pony rides in the parking lot, but we quickly refocused his creativity to something more doable.” The final decision was ambitious,

News Set in Disarray After Giant Smoke Rings Pound Anchors

I took a large smoke ring blaster that I used on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to the 9News studios in Denver this week. I demonstrated the power of air pressure and what a microburst looks like. What resulted was giant smoke rings blown across the television studio and scripts and hairdos in chaos.

The smoke ring blaster is a larger version of the Airzooka toy. It was built for a sub shop promo in Minneapolis. I asked if I could use it to teach kids about air pressure.

Not Your Ordinary Book Signing – Science Enthusiasts Visit Tattered Cover

Contributed by Susan Wells

A fun and electrifying night full of science demos and sticky soda awaited guests at Steve Spangler’s book signing at the Tattered Cover in Highlands Ranch Thursday. Steve was there to sign his new book, Naked Eggs and Flying Potatoes: Unforgettable Experiments that Make Science Fun.

This was not your usual book signing. The Tattered Cover is used to authors quietly reading from their book before a signing. They weren’t ready for Steve Spangler and his Science Crew.

Steve brought along several members of his staff who helped perform demos and entertain while people waited in line for Steve’s autograph.

Guests were greeted in the parking lot with Steve’s signature experiment – Mentos and Diet Coke geysers. Steve began the Internet sensation in 2005 on the NBC affiliate in Denver when he soaked news anchor Kim Christiansen. Some lucky bystanders pulled the cords and ran away from the sticky spray. This obviously had to be done in the parking lot – soda and books do NOT mix.

Ellen DeGeneres Wants Giant Smoke Rings!

ellenspangler.png

It’s official… I’m flying out to be a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show next week. Back in April of 2006 when a producer on the show originally contacted our office, I asked for your suggestions on experiments to do with Ellen. Lots of people suggested my Smoke Rings demo and Ellen might have taken your suggestion (hint, hint). Let’s just say that our office was filled with lots of smoke today as someone practiced shooting cups off of everyone’s head. We’re told that the air date will be next Friday, September 21, 2007. More to come.
