From the moment the gates opened at 9:30 AM, there was an air of excitement that ran through Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. The event was billed as the largest hands-on science show ever presented in Colorado… or maybe the country for that matter. In 2009, the Colorado Rockies teamed up with 9News KUSA-TV and Steve Spangler Science to produce the first annual Weather and Science Day, which drew a crowd of 5,400 and earned the Spangler team their first Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Physics Lesson.

Ticket sales to this year’s event were in excess of 10,000, making this a real challenge for the Steve Spangler Science team. “When we originally sat down and starting planning the event with Steve, he challenged us to help him create something more than a sit-and-watch show,” explained Carly Reed, special event coordinator at Steve Spangler Science. “Steve suggested pony rides in the parking lot, but we quickly refocused his creativity to something more doable.” The final decision was ambitious,

The Spangler team received its second Heartland Chapter Emmy Award last Saturday night at the awards gala held in Denver, Colorado. The award was received for the half hour television special – Spangler Science and Weather at Coors Field - that aired on KUSA-TV 9News in Denver, Colorado. But this award is extra special for the Spangler team because we share it with our own Bradley Mayhew who is credited on the Emmy as the editor.
The television special documented the first ever Weather and Science Day at Coors Field 2009. It was at this event that the Spangler team received its first Guinness World Record for the Large Physics Lesson – conducting a hands-on science demonstration with 5,401 people all at the same time.
Our first Heartland Chapter Emmy Award was awarded in 1997 while I was working at KCNC as the host of News for Kids, a nationally syndicated show that aired every Saturday morning.
Here’s a quick overview of the half hour

Our own Julie Gintzler (follow @juliegintzler) is on hand in Danville, Illinois for a new Guinness World Record attempt for 2,500 MENTOS® powered soda geysers. The event organizers contacted Steve Spangler Science in their initial planning stages to see if they could gain some tips and tricks from our past MENTOS geyser records. When you’re attempting a geyser launch this big, you need a great trigger device… and that’s a perfect job for our Geyser Tube.
Be Amazing! Toys, the distributor and of Steve Spangler’s Geyser Tube toy, supported the event with the donation of the Geyser Tubes toys. “When Steve contacted us about the event and asked for Be Amazing! Toys to partner with him and share in our support, we were excited to participate,” said Marc Greenberg, Vice-President of Marketing at Be Amazing! Toys. “We know first hand the amount of effort it takes to pull off a Guinness World Record, and using the event to support Shaken Baby Syndrome is a great combination.”
A large crowd of people from Danville, Illinois came out this morning to have some fun and to support Reagan’s Rescue
