Weather and Science Day 2011 – Erupting Clouds, Giant Smoke Rings and Exploding Trash Cans Captivate Huge Audience

From the moment the gates opened at 9:30 AM, there was an air of excitement that ran through Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. The event was billed as the largest hands-on science show ever presented in Colorado… or maybe the country for that matter. In 2009, the Colorado Rockies teamed up with 9News KUSA-TV and Steve Spangler Science to produce the first annual Weather and Science Day, which drew a crowd of 5,400 and earned the Spangler team their first Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Physics Lesson.

Ticket sales to this year’s event were in excess of 10,000, making this a real challenge for the Steve Spangler Science team. “When we originally sat down and starting planning the event with Steve, he challenged us to help him create something more than a sit-and-watch show,” explained Carly Reed, special event coordinator at Steve Spangler Science. “Steve suggested pony rides in the parking lot, but we quickly refocused his creativity to something more doable.” The final decision was ambitious,

Weather & Science Day Rescheduled Due to… WEATHER!

Weather and Science Day has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, May 17th. The Colorado Rockies management team decided to reschedule the event based on tomorrow’s forecast for rain/snow and cold temperatures in the morning during the event. There is no need for kids to be cold and wet.

The event will now be held before the 1:10 p.m. game on May 17th against the San Francisco Giants.

For those with tickets, your options are:

1.       Keep your tickets and attend the May 11 game.

2.       Exchange your tickets for the rescheduled Weather & Science Day on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. You must return ALL of your May 11 tickets to the Rockies Group Tickets office via mail or drop-off.

3.       Exchange your tickets for another game, May 24-26 or June 13-15. You must return ALL of your May 11 tickets to the Rockies Group Tickets office via mail or drop off.

Colorado Rockies Weather & Science Day 2010 – Attempting a New Guinness World Record?

Last year’s Weather & Science Day at Coors Field resulted in a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Physics Lesson. Thanks to support from the Colorado Rockies and 9News, the Steve Spangler Science team is excited to be a part of the 2nd Annual Colorado Rockies Weather and Science Day at Coors Field on May 12, 2010. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store for this year’s event.

The event is scheduled to kick-off at 10:30 a.m. when I’ll be joined by my good friend Kathy Sabine, meteorologist extraordinaire, from 9News (KUSA-TV in Denver). Over the years, I’ve subjected Kathy to every imaginable situation in an effort to create some new experience that makes science fun. This year, Kathy will share some of her best weather predicting secrets and teach us the science behind our most extreme weather in Colorado… and I’ll try not to blow her up.

Steve Spangler Science Sets New Guinness World Record at 9News Colorado Rockies Science Day

World’s Largest Physics Lesson

We’re honored to get to say, “We did it!” With a final count of 5,401 people, all armed with Windbags, the seats at Coors Field were flooded with science as we set out to set a new world record for the the Largest Physics Lesson.  What a sight… a sea of Windbags with a special fly-over by Sky9, that captured the moment on film from the helicopter.  The requirement for Guinness World Records was that the lesson last at least 30 minutes, but, we decided to take it to the next level and go for a full 51 minutes.  There were Mentos Geysers, Rockies players with Potato Guns, a lesson on Bernoulli’s Principle, and, of course, a giant kaboom for the finale. And, at the end of the lesson an official Guinness World Records adjudicator was on hand to present our team with a certificate for the new world record. 9News Weather & Science Day at Coors Field – It’s Not Your Normal Field Trip

The Colorado Rockies, 9News and Steve Spangler Science teamed up to launch the first Weather and Science Day at Coors Field. Over 1,000 Colorado elementary and middle schools have already been invited to join us at Coors Field in Denver on Thursday, May 7, 2009 for a day of learning and baseball. It’s a field trip and we’re turning Coors Field into your science lab.
