Kim Hill, a first grade teacher at Hayes Elementary School in Ada, Oklahoma, brought her love of science to the Cap Haitien Children’s Home in Cap Haitien, Haiti, this past February.
The Cap Haitien Children’s home is a Christian orphanage housing over 60 children. Its mission is to provide a loving and engaging atmosphere to help each child grow to become an educated citizen of Haiti.
Kim traveled to Haiti with her arsenal of science experiments. The first science experiment was polymers and Insta-Snow. When Kim began creating a blizzard on an island where snow is unheard of, the children were in disbelief. It was snowing in Haiti!
As the children mixed water with the white polymer powder, snow grew before their eyes. Discoveries abounded and pretty soon the snow was flying through the air and sprinkled in hair. Who knew you could have a snowball fight in Haiti?

The students in Mr. Kane’s second grade class at Wilder Elementary learned about eco-friendly materials and how they can help us all go green. Mix two chemicals together and wait for the reaction. The chemicals produce a polymer called polyurethane foam. Polyfoam has a high R value and is used in furniture, packaging, insulation and floatation devices. Homebuilders spray the polyurethane into the walls of a house to give insulate against hot and cold weather. The lightweight foam expands to about 30 times its original liquid volume and becomes rigid.

April Fool’s day is this Friday. Do you have your pranks ready to go? Our staff spends the majority of March perfecting their pranking in anticipation of the day. I’d declare April 1st a company-wide holiday, except it’s too much fun to mess with your co-workers. A day off of work would just ruin the “holiday.”
A few of our staffers practiced their tricks last week in our company kitchen using Water Gel, coffee and a little imagination.
Hydrogels, or super absorbant polymers, can absorb over 100x their own weight in water. Farmers and gardeners use it to keep crops and plants hydrated during times of drought. It can also be used as the perfect prop for pranks and magic tricks.

This prank is incredibly easy to pull off and the look on your victims’ faces are guaranteed to be priceless!
