Science Sisters Light Up a Homemade Laboratory and Bring Science to Life

By Blog Editor Susan Wells

Sisters Keira and Shaylie are student scientists with a real knack for chemistry. They live in Bend, Oregon and along with friend Caroline, have turned a bathroom in their home as well as a playroom into science labs.

We had the pleasure of learning about these exceptional girls around the holidays. They had a regular Christmas wish list and a second, Steve Spangler Science wish list. After watching some of their experiment videos and hearing about their scientific discoveries in their homemade lab, in their driveway and in the dark, we had to share their amazing talent and zest for learning.

Keira, 12, is described by her dad as a “very studious child.” She was placed in a TAG (Talented and Gifted) program by her kindergarten teacher. Over the years, science has become her favorite subject. Her best friend Caroline, 11, helps with the science activities.

Sister Shaylie, 9, is more of an inventor and sometimes the assistant when the girls perform experiments in their lab.

Keira says she and Caroline really got into science in 5th grade when their class took a field trip to a local

Staff Spotlight on Randy in Production

Q: Tell us a little about who you are…

A:  I am a Denver boy who’s tried his hand on the east coast, west coast, Japan and Texas and have found no greater place to be than Denver.  I have a band called Total Ghost that I spend a lot of time outside of work in and I love to snowboard in the winter and ride bikes and longboard when in the summer.  Also I hope to one day own and run a beer brewery.

Q: What do you do at Steve Spangler Science?

A:  I work in Production which is an awesome team that assembles and organizes the products we have to offer.

Q: What do you like best about what you do?
A:  I love the fact that I basically get to play with toys for most of the day.  My team is super close-knit so it is really nice to work with a group of people who can make you laugh while getting the job done.

Pranks & Tricks for April Fool’s Day

April Fool’s day is this Friday. Do you have your pranks ready to go? Our staff spends the majority of March perfecting their pranking in anticipation of the day. I’d declare April 1st a company-wide holiday, except it’s too much fun to mess with your co-workers. A day off of work would just ruin the “holiday.”

A few of our staffers practiced their tricks last week in our company kitchen using Water Gel, coffee and a little imagination.

Hydrogels, or super absorbant polymers, can absorb over 100x their own weight in water. Farmers and gardeners use it to keep crops and plants hydrated during times of drought. It can also be used as the perfect prop for pranks and magic tricks.

Water Gel, the Sugar Substitute
This prank is incredibly easy to pull off and the look on your victims’ faces are guaranteed to be priceless!

  1. Start by emptying the sugar from it’s container. Be sure to put the sugar into another container so that it can be replaced later. The prank is bound to take a turn from funny to tragic if you waste all
