Look… It’s a Spooky Aurora!
I recently received this picture in my inbox from Solar Scientist Jim Stryder with the note – “Spooky Aurora”. I just had to ask the question, “What’s a spooky Aurora?” Here’s Jim’s response…
- The “spooky” Aurora’s, or (northern lights), are actually caused by the Sun. A solar storm, in this case, solar wind, is blasted into space, consists of billions of tiny charged particles. When these charged particles hit the Earth’s magnetosphere, you’ve got Auroras. Amazing! The green or red color is from oxygen and nitrogen glowing in the atmosphere. Sometimes you can also have “purple” colored Auroras. Aurora’s are called Aurora Borealis (northern hemisphere), and they also occur over the (southern hemisphere), and are called “Aurora Australis”. hi my name is hans and i was wondering what eskimos thought the northern lights were
I’m here to awnser Han’s question. The truth is eskimos thought that it was normal for it to happen. They thought that their gods were rewarding them for such a hard days work.
This is hans again and i would like to thank robert. I think i passed my project and i think i would like to do some more research. Can you tell me some books or internet sites that i could do some more research at?
I protest the comment by Robert. The eskimos were actually not religious at all. The only theory about their gods was that they worshipped the whales they hunted and killed. So in fact the Aurora had a much more symbolic meaning to the Eskimo’s. In reality they used the aurora to find out when it was time to go home as it appears late at night. That is why eskimo wives always wanted a clock seeing as they sometimes had full day and night.
