White-Knuckle Road Trip

I’m just getting too old for road trips. The alarm went off at 3:45 am and our conference team hit the road by 5:20 am. Destination? Anaheim, California to attend the largest early childhood conference in the world, NAEYC. For the 25,000 people who attend, it’s pronounced “Nay-see”. Five of us from our conference team left Denver in a Ford Excursion pulling a 20 foot trailer packed with 8,000 pounds of really cool science experiments. All was fine until the trailer started to sway uncontrollably just outside of Silverthorne, Colorado on I-70. Yours truly awoke to the sounds of the driver yelling, “Hang on!” For about 15 seconds, I thought that I would be posting my next blog from a hospital room or we would just set-up tables and start selling science toys on the side of the road. Fortunately, Jeff and Kerry (who is a professional truck driver) acted quickly to correct the sway and pulled us out of the scariest driving moment of my life.

Then we went to Burger King and drowned our fears in an egg and cheese Croissant. Only 21 more driving hours to go… with knuckles stark white.

Crazy story. Sounds like a real adventure though. I’ve found its memories like this that you remember and look back on and just laugh. Just imagine if the trailer tipped?? Goodbye road trip.
